First-Generation Week At Texas A&M Kicks Off Nov. 8

Texas A&M University is celebrating the determined spirit of students, faculty and staff who are, or were, the first in their families to earn a four-year degree. First-generation students are broadly defined as those whose parents have not earned a bachelor’s degree. About 25 percent of the undergraduate population at Texas A&M University identify as being first-generation students.

With support from the Office for Student Success’ Routh First-Generation Center, the Office of the President and the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President, among others, the weeklong celebration begins Nov. 8 and will showcase all walks of life being lived by students, faculty and staff. Each day’s theme will feature mini-profiles, from students to employees, along with events around the university.

“Celebrating first-generation students pays tribute to their accomplishments, as well as honoring the sacrifices others have made to help them on that journey,” said Interim Provost and Executive Vice President Timothy P. Scott. “We’re excited to recognize the significance four-year degrees will make in the lives of our students.”

First-Gen Week events around the university include:

Monday, Nov. 8 – Unit/College/Department Day Celebrations

Tuesday, Nov. 9 – Faculty and Staff Day

Wednesday, Nov. 10 – First-Generation Celebration at Rudder Plaza

Thursday, Nov. 11 – Veterans Day and First-Generation Student Panel

Friday, Nov. 12 – First-Generation Poster Gallery Walk at the Memorial Student Center
