As the nation remembers George H.W. Bush on the 99th anniversary of his birth, Texas A&M is looking back on the former president’s special relationship with Aggieland. These photographs show some of the most memorable moments from his time on campus.

While A&M has been a popular destination for sitting presidents for more than 80 years, including when five living former presidents convened on campus for a hurricane relief benefit concert in 2017, Bush was a permanent fixture of campus life, making regular visits to Aggieland from 1997 — when he opened his presidential library at A&M — until his death in 2018.

He was a frequent surprise visitor to classes at the Bush School of Government and Public Service, and was fond of attending Aggie athletic events. On occasion, he could even be found working out and interacting with students at the Rec Center.

His final trip to Aggieland came on December 6, 2018, as Union Pacific 4141 carried the former president’s remains from Houston to College Station. He was laid to rest on the grounds of his presidential library, next to former First Lady Barbara Bush and their daughter Robin.
