Texas A&M University remains the only public college in Texas to make the “Best Buys” list in the 2020 Fiske Guide to Colleges, a listing which cites the best colleges that offer a superior education for the most affordable cost.

The Fiske Guide annually grades colleges based on their academic programs and quality in relation to total cost, meaning the schools listed are the best bargains for the money. Its rankings are among the select of any organization: only 10 public and 10 private universities make up the “Best Buys” list in the Fiske Guide.

Texas A&M is the only public university in Texas to make the list, while Rice University is the sole private school in the state in the Fiske Guide. The University of Florida is the only other Southeastern Conference public school to make the list, while SEC-member Vanderbilt University also made the Fiske Guide private school ranking.

Of special note about Texas A&M, the Fiske Guide says, “In-state students at this tradition-rich university can lock in their tuition rate for four years.”

Edward Fiske, who created the guide 36 years ago, said, “Parents and students are becoming increasingly cost-conscious, and they want the best education possible for their child within the financial limits.”
He is a former education editor of the New York Times.
