Texas A&M Former Student, System Regent Named AMA President-Elect
Susan Rudd Bailey, MD, a 1981 graduate of the Texas A&M College of Medicine, has been named president-elect of the American Medical Association (AMA). Bailey, who was a member of the College of Medicine’s charter class, will officially take office in June 2020 and will be the third consecutive woman to hold the office.
“It is a deep honor and privilege to be named president-elect of an organization that is committed to helping the medical profession and the patients we serve,” Dr. Bailey said during her acceptance speech, according to an AMA announcement.
The AMA, which is headquartered in Chicago, is one of the largest medical associations in the country with more than 250,000 members. The organization represents physicians and other stakeholders while also promoting “the science and art of medicine and the betterment of public health.”
Bailey has served in numerous leadership positions and was the first female former student to become a regent for The Texas A&M University System. She was the 145th president of the Texas Medical Association (TMA), served as speaker and vice speaker of the TMA’s House of Delegates, chaired the TMA’s delegation to the AMA’s House of Delegates, and chaired the TMA Council on Communication and the TMA and AMA Medical Student sections.
Bailey has more than 30 years of clinical practice and currently is an allergist in private practice in Fort Worth, Texas.
Nancey Dickey, MD, who currently serves as A&M Rural and Community Health Institute executive director and president emeritus of the Texas A&M Health Science Center, became the fist woman to serve as AMA president in 1997.
