Health And Kinesiology Topics Presented At Hilliard Discussion 8 On Nov. 2

Eight sports medicine and human performance experts will speak conversationally for 15 minutes each during this year’s Hilliard Discussion.

The Sydney and J.L. Huffines Institute for Sports Medicine and Human Performance in the Texas A&M University College of Education and Human Development will host the 8th Annual Hilliard Discussion Friday, Nov. 2 from 1-4 p.m. at the Annenberg Presidential Conference Center at the George Bush Presidential Library Complex.

Eight sports medicine and human performance experts will speak conversationally for 15 minutes each.

“Our subject areas are wide-ranging and cover topics such as nutrition, physical performance, and how the brain makes it all work together,” Dr. Timothy Lightfoot, director of the Huffines Institute and professor of kinesiology, said.

This year’s presentations will include “Physiology of Athletes,” “The LINE-1 Jumping Gene” and “Taste the Future.”

This year’s speakers include:

  • Michael Roberts – School of Kinesiology, Auburn University, “The LINE-1 Jumping Gene: Hopping from Cancer Research to Exercise Science”
  • David Basset – Dept. Head, Dept. of Kinesiology, Recreation, and Sport Studies, University of Tennessee – Knoxville, “Physiology of Athletes: Exploring the Limits of Human Performance”
  • Daniel Acheson – Executive Director / CEO, Drum Corps International, “Getting In Step With the Largest Team On Campus”
  • Susan Kleiner – High Performance Nutrition, LLC, “The New Power Eating”
  • Lisa Langston – Director, Athletic Department, Fort Worth Independent School District, “Using Athletics to Optimize the academic and Learning Experience of Student-Athletes”
  • Jeff Woods – Assoc. Dean for Research and Dept. of Kinesiology and Community Health, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, “The Power of Poop: Exercise and the Gut Microbiota”
  • Jeff Beeler – Dept. of Psychology, Queens College and the Graduate Center, City University of New York, “Dopamine: The neural chi”
  • T. Bettina Cornwell, Edwin E. and June Woldt Cone Professor of Marketing, Lundquist College of Business, University of Oregon, “Taste the Future”
