TAMU holidayThe holiday season is a special time of the year. Many students will be attending festivities, shopping or traveling to spend time with family and friends. Unfortunately during this time, crime statistics increase and extra precautions must be taken.

The Texas A&M University Police Department encourages everyone to be cautious during the holiday season. Always be aware of your surrounding and report suspicious activity to law enforcement. By following these basic safety tips, you can decrease the chance of being victim.

While Shopping

Do not leave packages or valuables on the seat of your car. Lock them in the trunk or put them out of sight.

Carry only the credit cards you need and avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
Always keep your purse or wallet with you; never leave it unattended.

Beware of “good deal” scams. Things are not always what they appear to be.

Shop with a friend. There is safety in numbers.

Park in a highly visible area with good lighting.

Have your keyless entry remote or keys in hand when approaching your vehicle. You will be ready to unlock the door and will not be delayed by fumbling and looking for your keys.

Watch for people who may be following you. If you suspect someone is following you, report it to the police immediately.

For Your Off-Campus Apartment/Home

Properly lock all doors and windows when leaving your residence.

Ask a trusted neighbor to watch your residence and to park in your driveway or parking space from time to time.

Give your home an occupied appearance by using an automatic timer to turn inside and outside lights on and off.

Stop your mail and newspaper deliveries or have a trusted neighbor collect them for you.

If you go out for the evening, turn on lights and a radio or television so the house or apartment appears to be occupied.

Burglars know to look for the hidden door key near the front entrance. Don’t hide spare keys under rocks, in flowerpots, or above door ledges. Instead give the spare key to someone you trust.

Valuables should not be visible through the windows and doors of your residence.

If you leave your vehicle parked on campus or at your residence during the holiday break, remember to:

Park your vehicle in an area that is visible to the public and well-lit at night.
Secure all doors and windows.

Remove all valuables or secure them out of sight.

If your vehicle has a built-in security, use it.

When leaving for a holiday or vacation, do not pack your car the night before. It only makes a more attractive target for a thief.

Holiday Parties and Festivals

If you know you’ll be out late, plan ahead to ensure you’ll get home safely.

Avoid going alone, invite a friend or someone you can trust.

Avoid over consumption of alcohol. Know your limits.

DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE! Use a designated driver, Uber or a cab.
