The coveted Montague-CTE Scholar Awards will be awarded to nine tenure-track faculty members at a Texas A&M University luncheon on Thursday (Nov.10) in Koldus 110/111.

“This is the most important event of the year for the Center for Teaching Excellence,” says Chandrika Rajagopal, CTE’s development coordinator. “And we are very pleased that all the award winners will be able to attend the luncheon.”

The Montague-CTE Scholar award is given annually to a tenure-track faculty member — one selected from each college — based on his or her early ability and interest in teaching. Awardees receive a $6,500 grant to encourage further development of undergraduate teaching excellence.

The awards are named in honor of Kenneth Montague ’37, a distinguished alumnus and outstanding trustee of the Texas A&M Foundation, who had a long and storied career in the Texas oil industry. Ken and Judy Montague endowed a generous gift in 1991 to benefit the future Ken Montagues, or Aggies who are lifelong learners and contributors to their communities. Today, there are more than 150 Montague-CTE scholars on the Texas A&M University campus.

The Center for Teaching Excellence is deeply grateful to the Montague’s son, Jim, and his wife, Vicki, for their generous and sustained support in recognizing excellence in teaching and learning at Texas A&M University, says Rajagopal.

The following faculty members have been named as the 2011-2012 recipients:

  • Sandun Fernando, College of Agriculture & Life Sciences
  • Kevin Glowacki, College of Architecture
  • Subodha Kumar, Mays Business School
  • Jamilia Blake, College of Education and Human Development
  • James Caverlee, Dwight Look College of Engineering
  • Brendan Roark, College of Geosciences
  • Steve Balsis, College of Liberal Arts
  • Charles M. Folden III, College of Science
  • Michael Criscitiello, College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Science

Posters will be on display highlighting past Montague-CTE Scholars and their projects at the luncheon. There will also be a slideshow featuring past Montague-CTE Scholars, the Montague family members and the newest scholars.

Thursday’s luncheon ceremony will feature an opening address by Ben Wu, associate dean of faculties and director of the CTE, followed by a welcome speech delivered by James Kracht, interim assistant provost for undergraduate studies.

After lunch, Karan Watson, provost & executive vice president for academic affairs, will address the gathering, followed by Debra Fowler, associate director of the CTE, who will announce the awards. Each scholar will be introduced and asked to come forward to be presented with a plaque and medal while Fowler reads a brief version of his or her bio.

The luncheon will conclude with closing remarks from Antonio Cepeda-Benito, dean of faculties, after which the 2011-2012 scholars will enjoy the opportunity to mingle with luncheon guests.
