The Texas A&M University Corps of Cadets Leadership Excellence Program awarded 131 cadets with the Academic Certificate in Leadership Studies on Sunday, Apr. 19.

The Corps of Cadets Leadership Excellence Program, established in 2002, operates in conjunction with the Office of the Commandant to develop well-educated leaders of character who are prepared answer the call for values-based leadership in the public and private sectors.

The Academic Certificate in Leadership Studies is an academic award that is noted on students’ official university transcripts and verifies participants have included with formal education, a series of training and development opportunities.

The coursework consists of 12 credit hours of university recognized leadership, including four one-hour School of Military Sciences courses and eight credit hours from other Texas A&M departments. Cadets must maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average in this coursework to receive credit.

A focus on three components – academics, application and experience allows cadets to receive targeted learning experiences and the opportunity to put their skills into practice within the Corps, campus organizations and internships both on and off campus. The courses and testing of the program are designed to ensure that students can fulfill the requirements essential to their development as a leader in their profession.

“This program is at the forefront of preparing students for success outside the academic arena,” says Dr. Richard Cummins, director of the Corps of Cadets Leadership Excellence Program. “Corporate recruiters indicate many students come equipped with terrific number-crunching skills or marketing know-how, but show little aptitude for leading a team, managing a crises or influencing the people who work for them. Our program parallels what these recruiters are trying to accomplish in their hiring process—and our cadets are at the top of their list.”

The Corps of Cadets Leadership Excellence Program and the Office of the Commandant at Texas A&M would like to congratulate its 2009 Certificate in Leadership Study and Development recipients.
