Sbisa Dining Hall, a beloved landmark on the Texas A&M campus and its original dining hall, is getting ready to mark its 110th birthday.

Aggie Dining — the dining services program at Texas A&M — will be celebrating this historic event with a birthday bash on Wednesday, Sept. 20, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Sbisa.

Named after the iconic Bernard Sbisa, who served as supervisor of the Subsistence Department at Texas A&M from 1879 to 1926, this dining hall has been at the heart of campus life, feeding more than 4,000 students a day.

Sbisa holds a special place in the history of Texas A&M, with records dating back to an article in the Bryan Eagle, published on Sept. 18, 1913. According to the article, Sbisa opened its doors to cadets on Sept. 20, 1913, just days before the start of the school year. The first meal served  was on that very day, and Aggie Dining is honoring the traditions held at the certified green restaurant dining hall 110 years later to the day.

“It’s an honor to be a part of such a historical legacy,” says David Riddle, Chartwells regional vice president. “We are thrilled to celebrate the dining hall that has served generations of Aggies for more than a century.”

Celebrating Decades Of Service

The birthday bash promises food and fun for all attendees, including the revival of a “build-your-own sundae bar,” a special pop-up that was held weekly at Sbisa in its earlier days, and more than 1,200 cupcakes to commemorate the dining hall’s birthday. As a special treat, the first 300 guests to arrive will receive goodie bags with commemorative Sbisa stickers, helping make this celebration even more memorable.

The birthday bash will celebrate the eras that Sbisa has been open through since 1913. Whether it be the roaring 20s, the golden-age 50s or the rockin’ 80s, Sbisa Dining Hall has seen it all in its 110 years of service. Aggie Dining invites you to reminisce and celebrate the enduring legacy of Sbisa Dining Hall through its eras.
