Derin Oduye’s business card features a quote from Maya Angelou: “If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.” It is a quote Oduye lives by.

Oduye, a senior political science major originally from Lagos, Nigeria, described how everyone in her family went to the University of Texas at Austin. So naturally, she chose Texas A&M University as her undergraduate home.

She grew up in a family filled with lawyers and humanitarians, and this has shaped her work ethic and career goals.  Oduye admitted that political science was always something she wanted to study.

“I think a lot of people come into political science thinking that they will be talking and debating a lot, but it really is much more critical-thinking…which is extremely applicable in anything that you want to do in life. I plan on going to law school next year, and my major has greatly helped prepare me for that,” she said.

Among other feats, like recently being accepted into one of the top law schools in the country, Oduye is heavily involved with the Texas A&M chapter of Amnesty International, a human rights watch group. Oduye’s involvement in the organization was inspired by J.K. Rowling.
