Texas A&M University’s Department of Recreational Sports and the Texas A&M Rugby Club will host rugby teams from three other schools within The Texas A&M University System Saturday (Nov. 21) in the inaugural Chancellor’s Cup, an initiative of Texas A&M System Chancellor John Sharp.

Chancellor’s Cup events begin at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Penberthy Recreational Sports Complex with a presentation by Chancellor Sharp, with competition beginning at noon and including both men’s and women’s teams. The chancellor also is scheduled to speak at the event’s banquet Saturday evening.

In addition to the Aggie squad, Prairie View A&M, Tarleton State and Texas A&M-Central Texas will have teams competing in the Chancellor’s Cup.

“This is a great opportunity to collaborate with other system schools,” says Dennis Corrington, executive director of Texas A&M Recreational Sports. “We are always excited to spotlight our sport clubs and student athletes as well as provide opportunities for them to develop within their programs.”

The event is named in honor of Chancellor Sharp because of his support for the rugby program at Texas A&M and for the sport generally; note the event’s organizers, who point out that Sharp played on Texas A&M’s Rugby Club team in 1972.

“We are honored to host an event that is going to support rugby throughout the state of Texas,” says Keith Joseph, Texas A&M’s sports club director. “Overall, the concept of developing rugby teams is developing leadership opportunities for students.”

Braeden Hood, vice president of Texas A&M’s Men’s Rugby Club, agreed, saying: “This event will help strengthen the presence of rugby throughout the Texas A&M System, as well as publicize Sevens Rugby for the upcoming 2016 Olympics.”
