Cadet Sara Carriker ’15 is a history major from Grafenwoehr, Germany, and is the daughter of Monica and James Underwood and Bruce Carriker. A member of Texas A&M University’s Corps of Cadets, she is serving as the Artillery Band Commander for the 2014 – 2015 school year. Sara attended an American school in Germany, and had never heard of Texas A&M before becoming involved in ROTC. After being accepted to West Point and also receiving a four-year Army ROTC scholarship to Texas A&M, she knew she wanted to come to Texas to be part of the best marching band in the nation – the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band.

Active within the Corps, Sara is a member of the Bugle Rank in the Aggie Band. She plays the mellophone and has also served as a team leader and platoon sergeant in B-Battery. She was also a member of the Bataan Death March team for 2014, ran the 2012 Bryan-College Station (BCS) half marathon, and ran the 2013 BCS full marathon. Outside the Corps, Sara is a member of the Texas A&M Cupcakes – a non-profit organization for Aggies who have a love for baking and serving others through community service and fundraising. The organization sells cupcakes to support the Brazos Valley Food Bank, and all members also volunteer at the food bank. She is also the cadet correspondent for the Texas Aggie Band Show. After graduation in May 2015, Sara will commission into the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant. She aspires to a career in the Army and ultimately plans to open her own bakery. Sara is a talented young woman who also has excelled as a leader and role model in the Aggie Band. She leads by example, and has been an exceptional example for others to emulate. Her success in the Aggie Band and her outstanding leadership abilities will serve her well in the future – especially in her desire for a career in the US Army. I expect to see Sara go on to great success in the future – both in the US Army and also as a future bakery owner! She is a leader of character who is going to make all Aggies very proud in the future – just as she has during her time in the Corps of Cadets! There are more than 2,450 cadets in Texas A&M’s Corps of Cadets. The mission of the Corps is to develop well-educated leaders of character who embody the values of honor, courage, integrity, discipline and selfless service. They are academically successful, highly sought-after and prepared for the global leadership challenges of the 21st Century.
