Texas A&M University ranks among the top four colleges in the nation—and first in Texas—in Washington Monthly’s new rankings, which take into major consideration factors such as research and service to the nation, as well as academic standing.

In the magazine’s 2014 rankings released Monday (Aug. 25), Texas A&M was headed only by three campuses of the University of California: (in order) San Diego, Berkeley and Riverside.

“We rate schools based on their contribution to the public good in three broad categories: Social Mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), Research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and PhDs), and Service (encouraging students to give something back to their country),” explain the Washington Monthly editors.

In addition to the overall top-four ranking in the magazine’s “national university” category, Texas A&M ranked fifth in that category in the publication’s “Best Bang for the Buck” listings. That category focuses on the “economic value students receive per dollar.” Texas A&M was the only national university in Texas listed among the top 25 in that category.

Texas A&M has consistently ranked among the leaders ever since Washington Monthly began its ratings in 2005.

“Over the last few years, rankings such as this one by Washington Monthly and others, such as Money Magazine, have attempted to evaluate the return on investment and the impacts on community, state and nation by our faculty and students,” noted Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Karan Watson. “It has been rewarding to see the heritage, hardwork and commitment of Texas A&M University faculty, staff and students be recognized so highly in these publications. I am proud of our efforts, which remind students that Aggies Commit to Learning for a Lifetime and our faculty continue to excel in our complete mission of teaching, research and service to our community, state and nation.”

Money magazine recently posted its new “best college values” rankings, which showed Texas A&M first in Texas and among the top six public universities nationally when combining quality, affordability and how an institution’s graduates fare monetarily in their careers. Texas A&M also ranked first in Texas and 17th among the nation’s top 100 public colleges in Kiplinger’s “best values” survey. Additionally, the university typically fares well in the annual rankings by U. S. News & World Report, particularly in its “Great Schools, Great Prices” assessment.
