Texas A&M University is one of the best places to work in America, according to Newsweek, and the only university in Texas on its list of “America’s Greatest Workplaces.”

“What makes Texas A&M special is our people; they are the foundation of this university’s success.”
— President Mark A. Welsh III

The elite ranking, which included just 14 universities out of 1,000 workplaces, surveyed more than 250,000 workers nationwide throughout 2022 and 2023 on job satisfaction. The final ranking represents the top companies whose employees “find it easy to stay engaged,” say Newsweek editors. The survey covered topics including compensation and benefits, training and career progression, work-life balance and company culture.

Texas A&M finds itself in top company as the other universities on the list are some of the nation’s most prestigious, including Harvard, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins and Vanderbilt. A total of 134 companies headquartered in Texas are on the list, including Texas Instruments, USAA, James Avery Craftsman, Memorial Hermann Healthcare System, Methodist Health System, NRG Energy and Schlumberger.

“What makes Texas A&M special is our people; they are the foundation of this university’s success. From our world-class faculty to our exceptionally talented staff, our employees are passionate about this university and what it stands for – things like pride, patriotism, service, family, loyalty and respect,” said General (Ret.) Mark A. Welsh III, president of Texas A&M. “These ideals are embraced by the Aggie Family and contribute to the supportive and dynamic environment that makes me and thousands of others proud to call Aggieland home.”

A&M employs more than 26,000 workers, including faculty, staff, graduate assistants, student workers and temporary employees. Its employees work at the flagship campus in College Station, as well as Bryan and other locations across Texas, Washington, D.C., and internationally.

People-Centric

Damon Slaydon, vice president of the Division of Human Resources and Organizational Effectiveness (HROE), says the recognition “underscores the excellence of Texas A&M and, most importantly, our Core Values of Loyalty, Respect and Integrity. These are intangible qualities that attract top talent and foster strong bonds, which are key to retaining the outstanding employees who lead efforts that support the future of Texas, our nation and the world.”

Slaydon also referenced HROE’s “people-centric” approach.

“A dedicated focus on listening to our stakeholders and partnering with our campus community to prioritize people-centric initiatives has ensured our employees feel engaged, valued and integral to the university’s success,” he said. “New employee onboarding welcomes team members with a heartfelt ‘HOWDY!’ and promotes a seamless transition into our team.”

Additionally, the university has advanced relevant career paths through market-driven compensation assessments. “With the support of President Welsh, Texas A&M has committed significant effort and funding to ensure that employees are hired at rates consistent with established living wage rates,” Slaydon said. “We take immense pride in these, and many other initiatives aimed at creating the best employee experience at Texas A&M.”

Slaydon credited all of A&M’s employees for making the university a great place to work.

“Each and every one of our 26,000 employees is a vital member of our team, contributing to Texas A&M’s mission to prepare students for leadership, responsibility, and service to society.”
