U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken this week announced Texas A&M University has been designated a 2023 Fulbright Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Leader. Only 46 universities were honored with the distinction for demonstrating noteworthy engagement with the Fulbright Program by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA).

Blinken thanked the university’s administration, faculty, students and staff for their work in achieving the designation.

“Texas A&M University exemplifies a deep commitment to international exchange and to building lasting connections between the people of the United States and other countries,” Blinken said. “Designation as a 2023 Fulbright HSI Leader is a testament to your institution’s dedication to promoting global engagement and mutual understanding among peoples and nations.”

The announcement was made in conjunction with the International Plenary Session of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) annual meeting in Chicago.

“Texas A&M University’s commitment to international scholarship and global engagement can be traced back nearly to the institution’s land grant launch in 1876,” said Provost and Executive Vice President Dr. Alan Sams. “Designation as a Fulbright HSI Leader stems from our expanded global impact that includes research on every continent and international students and scholars from more than 120 countries.”

This February, Texas A&M was named a 2022-23 Fulbright Top Producing Institution by the U.S. Department of State’s ECA Bureau. This recognition is given to the colleges and universities that received the highest number of applicants selected for the 2022-23 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program.

The university has seven faculty members, administrators or researchers who were selected for Fulbright U.S. Scholar awards for the current academic year — more than any other university in the state. Nationally, the university is tied for No. 8 among Top Producers in the doctoral category for the scholar program. The university has celebrated one or more faculty U.S. Fulbright Scholar every year since 1949.

Texas A&M was designated as the seventh federally designated Hispanic Serving Institution by the U.S. Department of Education in March 2022 after being recognized as an HSI by HACU in November 2021.

Fulbright HSI Leader and related designations reflect the mission of the Texas A&M Office of the Provost and Division of Academic Affairs to empower and nurture Aggies to succeed in experiential and transformational education and discovery to meet the needs of a complex world.
