Each spring the Graduate and Professional School partners with the Graduate and Professional Student Government (GPSG) to plan Graduate Community of Scholars events during or around national Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Week. Founded in 1993 by the National Association of Graduate and Professional Students and held annually the first week of April, the event recognizes the “contributions, impact and value of graduate and professional students” across the nation’s campuses.

These recognitions provide an opportunity to highlight graduate and professional students at Texas A&M, said Dr. Fuhui Tong, interim associate provost and dean of the Graduate and Professional School.

“Graduate and professional students contribute to the success of Texas A&M in so many ways,” Tong said. “They are integral in helping us fulfill our teaching and research mission. They also participate and serve in leadership roles in campus organizations, all while developing the skills to become the leaders, teachers and innovators to meet tomorrow’s challenges. Graduate Community of Scholars programming is just one way we can celebrate and honor what they bring to our university and express our gratitude,” Tong said.

In addition to the events, the Graduate and Professional School has selected three “unsung heroes” who demonstrate extraordinary service to the university in a way that exemplifies this year’s Graduate Community of Scholars theme, Outspoken: Leading with Our Aggie Voices.

School officials say these students use their voice and platform to inspire, uplift and connect others. The awardees are:

  • Delaney Couri, a doctoral student in the Department of Communication and Journalism
  • Fabian Leon, a master’s student in the Department of Soil and Crop Sciences
  • Bryton Praslicka, a doctoral student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

Each awardee received a $1,000 scholarship to use for research, presentation, professional development, or training/travel expenses and was recognized at the Graduate Community of Scholars Dinner & Dialogue on March 21.
