The Texas A&M University School of Education and Human Development will host its seventh annual Voices of Impact speaker series on Feb. 23, where researchers will discuss their areas of expertise and share their perspectives on issues impacting society. The researchers will present their interests in ways that make the research understandable and accessible to all.

This year, nine faculty and doctoral students from the school’s four departments will each deliver five-minute speeches showing the community the breadth of the school’s research. This year’s topics include teacher shortages, ways to control cancer and how to fight burnout.

Below is the list of speakers and their topics:

  • Francis Quek – Reenergizing the American Dream
  • James Fluckey – A conquest to control cancer
  • Lizette Ojeda – Becoming burnout-proof
  • Matthew Etchells – Retaining beginning teachers
  • Michael Thornton – Tackling the teacher-coach shortage
  • Nathan Hawk – Charter school’s spot at the table
  • Jennifer Ackerman – Coming out and mental health
  • Kimia Carter – The power of using your voice
  • Meaghan Devlin – Understanding inclusion and accessibility

“For seven years, the School of Education and Human Development has been proud to bring Voices of Impact to the community surrounding Texas A&M,” said Michael A. de Miranda, dean of the school and among the speakers at the first Voices of Impact event in 2017. “This event exemplifies SEHD’s culture of excellence and serves as an opportunity for everyone to learn from the minds behind our current and impactful research.”

The event is free and open to the public at the Ice House on Main in Downtown Bryan (800 N. Main Street). Doors will open at 5 p.m., with food and beverages served before presentations begin at 6 p.m. A reception will follow the event and is open to all.
