Graduate And Professional Education Week Oct. 19-22 To Feature Virtual Events

Texas A&M will mark Graduate and Professional Education Week Oct. 19-22 with virtual events culminating in the State of Graduate and Professional Education Address on Oct. 22.

The Office for Graduate and Professional Studies (OGAPS) is hosting the week’s virtual events and invites participants to celebrate award recipients and learn more about post-grad education at Texas A&M.

The week’s virtual events may all be viewed on YouTube Premier. Links will be posted on the OGAPS website.The schedule is as follows:

2020 Distinguished Dissertation and George W. Kunze Endowed Graduate Student Awards Ceremony
Monday, Oct. 19, 11-12 p.m.
Four awardees whose dissertations represent extraordinarily high-level scholarship and make a significant contribution to their field of study will be honored this year. In addition, the George W. Kunze Endowed Graduate Student Award will be given in the name of longtime Texas A&M Graduate Dean George W. Kunze to recognize one doctoral student’s outstanding scholarly work.

2020 Association of Former Students Distinguished Graduate Student Award Ceremony
Tuesday, Oct. 20, 11-12 p.m.
This year, 18 graduate students earned Association of Former Students Distinguished Graduate Student Awards in one of two categories: Excellence in Research-Doctoral and Excellence in Teaching-Masters and Doctoral.

2020 U.S. Senator Phil Gramm Doctoral Fellowship Award Ceremony
Wednesday, Oct. 21, 11-12 p.m.
The U.S. Senator Phil Gramm Doctoral Fellowship was established to promote, encourage and reward outstanding teaching and research by doctoral students whose command of their respective disciplines exemplifies the meaning of scholarship and mentorship in the highest sense. This year OGAPS will be honoring seven exceptional graduate student recipients of the Gramm Doctoral Fellowship.

State of Graduate and Professional Education Address
Thursday, Oct. 22 11-12 p.m.
During the State of Graduate and Professional Education Address, Associate Provost Karen Butler-Purry will update the university community on the current state of Graduate and Professional Studies at Texas A&M, sharing some of the recent developments, challenges, and successes of the office, degree programs, and graduate and professional students, as well as its vision for the future. The Montgomery Award recipient will be announced as well as a new award provided by the family of longtime Senior Associate Vice President in the Office of the Vice President of Research, Carol J. Cantrell, and a dedication of the Diversity Excellence Fellowships to Texas A&M’s first Hispanic and Black doctoral degree earners, Dionel Avilés ’53 and James Johnson ’67.
