The MSC Carter G. Woodson Black Awareness Committee is hosting an online discussion called Reacting to Racism: Being Anti-Racist and the Justice System on Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. via Zoom.

This event is the result of an action item created by the MSC Stand Up Against Racism Initiative (MSC SUAR) to address racial justice and equity.

The virtual event will feature Tiana Sanford ‘04, formerly involved in MSC ALOT, Fish Camp, Maggies, and the Student Government Association, and currently a Division Chief in the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office. She specializes in investigating and prosecuting public corruption, including misconduct by police officers, elected officials, and educators and also serves as the Legislative Liaison and the Community Liaison. Sanford will speak about implicit biases, self-awareness of those biases and the criminal justice system.

MSC officials said the initiative’s goal is to support the MSC’s commitment to promote an inclusive culture through discussion and education, encouraging students to explore new perspectives and its vision to strive to be the leader in diversity efforts among the Division of Student Affairs through programming and the development of leaders in the pursuit of creating a diverse marketplace of ideas.

Event organizers said they believe it isn’t good enough to only say you are not racist—you must be anti-racist and they hope participants will leave having gained knowledge and awareness of biases, the impact of racism in the justice system, and why it is important to be anti-racist.
