The George & Barbara Bush Foundation and campaign chairman C. Boyden Gray today announced that ConocoPhillips is committing a $4 million gift to the “Campaign for Bold Horizons,” the foundation’s capital campaign to fund a series of critical improvements to the educational programs at the George H.W. Bush Presidential Center in College Station.

With the Bush Center nearing its 25th anniversary next year, the strategy behind the “Campaign for Bold Horizons” is to prepare the three institutions that comprise the Center – the Bush School of Government and Public Service, the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, and the George & Barbara Bush Foundation – to strengthen and broaden our educational mission, and reach even more people over the next quarter century.

The campaign’s goal is to raise $60 million by 2022 for improvements and programming in each of the Bush Center’s three institutions, including $25 million for the Bush School of Government and Public Service. The ConocoPhillips gift brings the funds raised to date to $15 million total since early 2019.

“President George H.W. Bush and his wife, Barbara, dedicated their lives to public service and selflessly helping others,” said Ryan Lance, chairman and chief executive officer of ConocoPhillips, who is also a member of the George & Barbara Bush Foundation Board of Trustees. “We hope this donation is meaningful to the George & Barbara Bush Foundation, which serves as a beacon to inspire future leaders to dedicate their lives to public service and service to others.”

The gift highlights a warm relationship between President and Mrs. Bush and ConocoPhillips dating back a quarter century and based on shared values.

  • Excluding this pledge, ConocoPhillips has previously contributed $3.2 million to the philanthropic legacies of President George H.W. Bush and his wife, Barbara.
  • ConocoPhillips is a longtime supporter of education and volunteerism and believes civic leadership is a noble calling.
  • ConocoPhillips has supported the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation since 1995.

“The George & Barbara Bush Foundation could not be more pleased to receive this very generous gift from one of America’s most respected energy companies,” said Bush Foundation CEO David Jones. “The Bushes were always focused on the future, and the purpose of our ‘Campaign for Bold Horizons’ is to prepare the Bush Center for its next quarter century of excellence – educating and inspiring our fellow Americans to serve their neighbors and their country with honor and decency.”
