Aggie Made Famous On Viral Video Graduates With Ph.D.

Marine biologist Christine Figgener became known worldwide after a video of her removing a plastic straw from the nose of a sea turtle went viral, helping spur the movement to eliminate the plastic straws.

Named by TIME magazine as a Next Generation Leader, this fall Christine Figgener earned her Ph.D. in marine biology from Texas A&M.

Figgener shot to global fame when her video, filmed in 2015, which shows her removing a plastic straw from the nose of a sea turtle, went viral.

The video, described by TIME as “heart-wrenching,” helped to raise awareness of the environmental hazard posed by plastic straws.
