More than 260 Texas A&M University at Galveston Maritime Academy cadets left Galveston as an entire academy aboard the T/S Golden Bear for the first time since 2005 for a seven-week, international training cruise last week.

Their ship will serve as an at-sea classroom the second half of the summer to allow cadets to fulfill their required sea days to graduate. The cadets will visit locations that include the Panama Canal, Honolulu and Seattle before ending the summer cruise in the Bay Area at Vallejo.

“Having a large ship like this is essential for our mission, both to train Merchant Marines, future Mariners, to support the maritime workforce throughout the Gulf of Mexico region, and really the United States and the world,” Texas A&M-Galveston Chief Operating Officer Michael Fossum said.

Their entire journey can be followed online on the 2019 Summer Sea Term website.
