Sexual Assault Awareness Month Events At Texas A&M

Aggies have an opportunity to attend events, activities and workshops to learn how to prevent sexual assault on campus.

Texas A&M University Health Promotion has announced a lineup of activities and educational opportunities for students, faculty and staff in observation of Sexual Assault Awareness Month on campus.

Event Title: Books That Speak Out

  • Sponsor: TAMU Health Promotion, Sexual Assault Resource Center (SARC), University Libraries, and Clara B. Mounce Public Library
  • DTP: April 1-30, standard operating hours, Evans Library, West Campus Library, Medical Sciences Library, Policy Sciences & Economics Library, Cushing Memorial Library, and Clara B. Mounce Public Library
  • Audience: Everyone
  • Cost: Free
  • Description: Health Promotion and SARC have partnered with some of your favorite on and off campus libraries to host Books That Speak Out: Sexual Assault Awareness Month Book Display. The displays will include a variety of books related to experiencing and surviving sexual assault. You will find everything from narratives to poetry and policy to self-care. Each display will also have resources available so you can learn more about getting support or helping a friend.

Event Title: Texas A&M Health Talk, SAAM edition

  • Description: Texas A&M Health Talk is created by staff and faculty at the Texas A&M University Health Science Center. Event Title: National Day of Action

  • Description: Wear teal on April 2 to show your support for sexual assault awareness and prevention. Snap a photo of yourself and post it on social media telling us what your teal is. Tag Health Promotion on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook and use the hashtag #WhatsYourTeal for a chance to win gift cards to local businesses.

Event Title: Take Back the Night

  • Sponsor: TAMU Health Promotion, Feminism 4 Aggies, SGA Diversity Commission, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Transcend, American Association of University Women, Council for Minority Student Association
  • DTP: 4/4, 6:30-8:30 p.m., Rudder Plaza
  • Audience: Everyone
  • Cost: Free
  • Description: The Mission of Take Back the Night (TBTN) is to raise awareness about the problem of sexual violence in all forms, show our support for survivors, and take a visible stand against the problem. TBTN has held events around the world since the 1960s and is a sign of empowerment, hope, and healing for those who have been hurt. The peaceful march will be held in Rudder Plaza. The march will include resource tables, speakers and performers, and a march through part of campus.

Event: Flow and Grow Yoga

  • Sponsor: Gen•e•sis Yoga
  • DTP: 4/5 6-7 p.m. Genesis Yoga, 111 E 27th St. Suite 302, Bryan, TX 77803
  • Audience: Everyone
  • Cost: Free, donations will be collected with 100% of proceeds going to the Sexual Assault Resource Center (SARC)
  • Description: This class is open to those practicing for the first time and experienced yogis. We highly encourage sexual assault survivors and their loved ones to attend. Sexual violence can impact every facet of a survivor’s life, including their physical, mental and spiritual health. More than yoga, this class aims to help you grow and re-connect to the self through mind, body, and spirit. This class also provides survivors of sexual violence a means of becoming reacquainted with their bodies, help them become grounded in the present moment, and allow them to explore the benefits of mindfulness as they flow breath to movement in guided practice and meditation. Come check out the studio and enjoy a great class!

Event Title: Women’s Self-Defense Seminar

  • Audience: Women identified individuals only
  • Cost: Free
  • Description: Join the Sexual Assault Resource Center (SARC) and instructors from Brazos Valley MMA to learn self-defense techniques, situational awareness tips, and facts about domestic and sexual violence. This awesome event is free and will be hosted at Delta Life Fitness in College Station, TX. Women and girls ages 13+ are welcome. Light refreshments will be provided.

Event Title: The Clothesline Project

  • Sponsor: The Collegiate Panhellenic Council
  • DTP: 4/10 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Rudder Plaza
  • Audience: Everyone
  • Cost: Free
  • Description: The Clothesline Project is a vehicle for victims/survivors and their supporters to express their emotions by decorating a t-shirt. They then hang the shirts on a clothesline to be viewed by others as testimony to the problem of interpersonal violence. CPC chapters will decorate shirts to hang on the clothesline and have them displayed in Rudder Plaza on April 10.

Event Title: SAAW Off Sexual Assault

  • DTP: 4/10 6-8 p.m. Penberthy Fields
  • Sponsor: Sophomore Leaders Impacting, Developing, and Educating (SLIDE)
  • Audience: Everyone
  • Cost: $7 tickets both pre-purchase and at the event
  • Description: Carnival style event where participants will get a punch card and travel around to the different booths. Participants will learn something new at each booth. Food is included in the ticket price and there is an opportunity to get a t-shirt!

Event Title: Green Dot Bystander Intervention Training

  • Sponsor: TAMU Health Promotion

  • Description: The Green Dot Strategy is an approach to violence prevention that focuses on active bystander intervention. Through training, participants will learn how to use the 3 D’s (direct, delegate, and distract) to intervene in any acts of power-based personal violence that they may witness.   • Description: Join SARC and Health promotion for a workshop on understanding trauma, support, resources, and self-care. This will be an interactive workshop where participants will be able to learn more about how they can help someone who has experienced trauma, as well as take care of themselves as secondary trauma survivors. We will be working through different aspects of self-care and there will be an opportunity to win gift cards to local businesses.

Event Title: Reel Relationships: The Hunting Ground

  • Description: Visit with university and community resources from 5:30-6 p.m. Visit all the tables and get entered into drawings to win gift cards to local businesses. The screening will start promptly at 6 p.m. In a tour de force of verité footage, expert insights, and first-person testimonies, The Hunting Ground follows undergraduate rape survivors pursuing both their education and justice, despite ongoing harassment and the devastating toll on them and their families. Following the documentary, there will be a question and answer period with an expert panel.

Event Title: UPD Women’s Self-Defense Class

  • Description: UPD Women’s Self-Defense is a specially designed self-defense class for women only, teaching easy to learn techniques for a variety of situations. Faculty, staff, and students are welcome. Preregistration is required and can be done at https://studentlife.tamu.edu/hp/updwsd/.

Event Title: Safe Sex Bingo

  • Sponsor: Feminism 4 Aggies and The Safe Sex Project

  • Description: Safe Sex Bingo informs participants through a bingo game format about healthy sexual behaviors, consent, and other sexual education topics where participants can win free prizes and gift cards to local businesses.

Event Title: 13th Annual Every Victim, Every Time Conference

  • Description: This two-day conference provides law enforcement, prosecutors, medical staff, teachers, social service agencies, mental health professionals, and others working with crime victims an opportunity to learn valuable information about victim issues related to the criminal justice system. Event Title: Stand Up Workshop

  • Description: The STAND Up workshop is designed to assist participants in learning positive and helpful ways to have conversations with individuals who have been involved in a traumatic event. The workshop provides information about sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, and stalking; social perspectives; the impacts of trauma on the brain; listening techniques; tools for mandated reporters; and campus and community resources. Event Title: Raise the Barre: This Is Me Music Video Workshop

  • Description: SWEATING FOR A CAUSE: We’re supporting charities that “raise the barre” in our community. All proceeds from our “Raise The Barre” event will go to the Sexual Assault Resource Center of Brazos Valley. Their mission is to end the cycle of violence in our community through education, empowerment, and advocacy. Learn the epic dance number, choreographed by Ashley Wallen, from the musical film “The Greatest Showman.” We’ll break it down for you and have you feeling empowered and ready to walk away with your head held high singing “THIS IS ME!”
