According to a Pew survey, two-thirds of Americans use social media, and companies across the nation are beginning to follow suit. The Department of Communication at Texas A&M University is introducing a new class and certificate that will prepare students for careers with emerging technologies.

“The department recognizes that social media management is a growing career field and it’s one that our students are interested in pursuing,” said Valerie Wilson, undergraduate academic advisor for communication. “We want to keep the Department of Communication and Texas A&M on the forefront of these emerging technologies and careers.”

The class, “Intro to Social Media,” COMM 275, will be taught by Nancy Parish this fall. Students can expect to learn the benefits and repercussions of social media in the marketing world as well as how to monitor their own habits.

“I want students to learn that social media can be beneficial, but there are also a lot of drawbacks to it, especially when it comes to posting questionable things,” said Parish. “My main point is that I want the humanities in the marketplace and I think this class is the solution.”

The course is open for registration now and will begin in the fall of 2018.
