Texas A&M Family Weekend Committee, a sponsored student organization at Texas A&M University, announced that Brett and Courtney Turner of Houston have been named as the 2018-2019 Parents of the Year at Texas A&M University.
On Sunday, March 25, 2018, the Turners’ family, friends and members of Texas A&M Family Weekend Committee gathered at the Turners’ home to surprise the couple with the news of their achievement. Brett Turner said that the news was unexpected, and he was honored to receive the award.
“I was completely surprised,” Brett Turner said. “It’s an honor. It is very, very humbling.”
The Turners were nominated by their daughter, Kylee Turner, a freshman at Texas A&M. Courtney Turner said the nomination by Kylee Turner alone was meaningful to the couple.
“We were humbled to be chosen, and that she thought enough of us to nominate us,” Courtney Turner said.
Every year, Texas A&M students nominate their parents and family members to represent the university as Parents of the Year. The Texas A&M Family Weekend Committee selects Parents of the Year based upon their character and embodiment of the Texas A&M core values of excellence, integrity, leadership, loyalty, respect and selfless service. Kylee Turner said she feels her parents are deserving of the award based upon the example they set for their children and the community.
“My parents are different from others in their character,” Kylee Turner said in her nomination. “They are so selfless, honest, trustworthy, supportive, encouraging, and a friend to everyone they encounter.”
Although the Turners were not able to attend Texas A&M, they are lifelong Aggie fans and feel honored to represent the university as Parents of the Year.
“I’m proud,” Courtney Turner said. “There’s such a comradery with all the A&M alumni, to be able to make that connection with them is awesome.”
The Turners will officially begin their role as Parents of the Year on the first day of Texas A&M Family Weekend, April 13, 2018. The Texas A&M Family Weekend Committee extends its gratitude to Rodney and Shelley Moss, the 2017-2018 Parents of the Year, for their service to the university over the past year.
The Texas A&M Family Weekend Committee, a sponsored student organization within the Office of New Student and Family Programs at Texas A&M, was founded in 1919 to celebrate the Aggie family by organizing Family Weekend. This year’s Texas A&M Family Weekend will be held April 13-15, 2018, and will include events such as the annual Aggie Moms’ Boutique, various Texas A&M athletic events and this year’s signature event, Family Weekend Carnival.
