Texas A&M At SXSW: Experience Aggie Innovation, Research At The ‘Discovery Lounge’

Texas A&M University’s innovation, discovery and global impact will be on full display during SXSW at the Discovery Lounge in the Courtyard Marriott’s Brazos Ballroom Tuesday, March 13.

Texas A&M’s participation in SXSW in 2018 will showcase faculty expertise and generate brand impressions with a global audience of 280,000 attendees in a way that solidifies the institution’s commitment to a modern, progressive future while celebrating its prestigious land-, sea-, and space-grant status, academic prominence and storied traditions. This week of panels, exhibitions and brand engagement opportunities will impart Texas A&M’s reputation for creating leaders of character and substance to the future employers of students.

The day of programming includes a live mural painting competition between student teams, a panel of Aggie astronauts and an opportunity to refresh, recharge and learn about Texas A&M’s food security research at the “Saving Mornings” Smoothie Counter.

Texas A&M X LIFEWTR Live Mural, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Two teams of Texas A&M students will create a mural in real-time at SXSW in a competition to have their artwork featured on apparel in a campus-series and win a compensation package provided by LIFEWTR.SXSW attendees will be able to judge the work after 3 p.m. via online app. A winner will be announced at Texas A&M’s Innovation Hour between 6-6:30 p.m.

“Saving Mornings” Smoothie Counter, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

Visitors will see how Texas A&M is protecting brunch staples like orange juice and coffee through initiatives like the Center for Coffee Research and Education. They will also become familiar with food security research, which includes combating citrus greening disease through spinach genome modification. Plus they can ride the “smoothie bike” and see how Texas A&M is making a difference in the lives of Texas communities with the Healthy South Texas initiative.

BBQ Genius Q&A Counter, 12-2 p.m.

Texas A&M “brisketeers” and Austin’s own Jess Pryles will be on hand at the Discovery Lounge to answer questions and do short presentations during session breaks in the afternoon; complemented by BBQ samples.

Aggies in Space, 2-4 p.m.

“Interview an Aggie Astronaut” will give visitors an opportunity to engage with former astronauts currently serving as faculty at Texas A&M with an overview of their experiences and why they chose Texas A&M as their home, followed by Q&A and autographs.

Discovery Lounge visitors will also be able to interact with virtual reality experiences like Texas A&M’s Global Impact VR station, where users will be able to experience Aggie innovation and research first-hand around the world, and Texas A&M at Galveston’s Buyer BeWhere portal. This portal allows users to search Galveston and Harris counties by address to receive a hazard risk assessment of up to nine hazards, including hurricanes, FEMA flood zones, past flood and contaminated lands.
