2. Texas A&M Graduate, Wounded Veteran Surprised With A Home On National Television

Lt. Garrett Spears, a class of 2011 graduate who was seriously injured after being struck by lightning during combat training in 2013, was given a custom-made, mortgage-free home by Operation FINALLY HOME in San Antonio on Fox News Channel’s All-American New Year broadcast.

Fossil remains found in a South African cave last year were determined by a Texas A&M anthropologist to almost certainly coexist with early Homo sapiens, and the discovery made Discover Magazine’s “Top 100 Stories for 2017.”

5. Texas A&M-Galveston Faculty, Staff Save Sea Turtles From Extreme Cold

The recent arctic cold front that dropped temperatures so quickly along the Texas Coast caused sea turtles to become cold-stunned, killing many, and Texas A&M University at Galveston stepped up to help save the turtles still at risk.
