Former Texas A&M University Head Football Coach R.C. Slocum will be the keynote speaker at the “Maroon Out 2017” reveal event at 6 p.m. on June 9 at C.C. Creations’ Maroon U store at 112 Holleman Dr. in College Station.

Hosted by the Class Councils Maroon Out Director Team and C.C Creations, the interactive event will celebrate 20 years of Maroon Out, reveal the new shirt design, and kick off sales for the 2017 football season. The first 50 attendees will receive a free Maroon Out 2017 shirt. The event will be open to Texas A&M students, faculty, staff and the general public.

Slocum, who was head coach during the very first Maroon Out game in 1998, will share his recollections of the historic match when the Aggies scored a stunning win over Nebraska, the reigning national champions.

Coming into Kyle Field, the Huskers were looking to defend their national championship; they were 5-0 and ranked No. 2. Texas A&M was 4-1 and ranked No. 18. But the Aggies had an ace up their sleeve, say Maroon Out directors — an extra boost of spirit from not only matching Nebraska’s famous “sea of red,” but eclipsing it with an even bigger “sea of maroon.” This phenomenon became known as “Maroon Out.” Leading up to the game, 31,000 Maroon Out shirts were sold, leading to a national shortage of maroon shirts. The Aggies beat Nebraska 28-21.

For the past 20 years, Maroon Out has been the physical embodiment of the 12th Man and has left a positive legacy on the campus, say organizers. Maroon Out has supported class gifts, allowing each class to leave a lasting legacy on campus, as well as give back to the university. A Maroon Out Scholarship has raised more than $150,000 over the past 10 years to help support students at Texas A&M. Maroon Out also supports Aggie traditions like Ring Dance, Elephant Walk, Junior E-walk, Pull Out Day, Fish Fest and the Class Councils Aggie Rings for Veterans Endowment.

Maroon Out 2017 will be held Nov. 4 against the Auburn Tigers. Fans are encouraged to show their spirit to BTHOauburn, and to support Aggie traditions and scholarship by purchasing a Maroon Out shirt. The 2017 Maroon Out shirts will be available at C.C. Creations’ The Warehouse and Maroon U starting June 9. Shirts will be available on campus on weekdays 10 a.m.-3 p.m. beginning Sept. 8. Fans can also obtain shirts before home football games in the John J. Koldus building.
