Texas A&M University is the only public university in Texas to rank among the top 50 national universities in the “Great Schools, Great Prices” category of the 2017 “Best Colleges” guidebook published by U.S. News & World Report – and it maintains its overall second-place ranking in that key assessment of public institutions.

Texas A&M’s programs in engineering and business rank among the leaders in comparison to those at other public universities in the magazine’s annual fall rankings that focus on undergraduate programs.

U.S. News is the third national publication within the past month to publish rankings in which Texas A&M fared well, particularly those in which “value” is a key factor.

Texas A&M’s College of Engineering again ranks among the top such programs in the nation and its Mays Business School moved up in both public and overall rankings.

The College of Engineering tied for 8th among public universities and tied for 16th overall. Its petroleum engineering program is ranked 2nd nationally and its program in biological/agricultural program is 4th.

Mays moved up to a tie for 17th among publics and 27th overall.

The magazine also included Texas A&M in its “Best Colleges for Veterans” listing.

“It’s wonderful to see Texas A&M increasingly recognized nationally in these highly positive manners, especially rankings that reflect high quality academics, cost effectiveness in providing high-quality education and overall service to the nation,” said University President Michael K. Young. “Our engineering and business programs are deservedly cited prominently in these new U.S. News rankings, and I am confident a number of our other programs would have been so rated if they had been included in the magazine’s assessments.”

Texas A&M remains in the top third of the nation’s 200-plus top-tier institutions as tabulated by the magazine – tied at 27th among public institutions and at 74th overall in the rankings dominated by private schools.

The magazine’s annual rankings were made public today (Sept. 13) in advance of its “Best Colleges” guidebook that is scheduled to be on newsstands later this month, according to an announcement by the publication’s editors.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the only public university to rank higher than Texas A&M in the “Great Schools, Great Prices” category. Texas A&M is ranked 21st overall and is joined by Rice, at 14th place, as the only ranked Texas institutions in that category.

The U.S. News & World Report rankings are the latest results showing that Texas A&M is continuing to attract positive attention at the national level.

Washington Monthly ranked Texas A&M 6th among all U.S. universities – public and private – in its rankings announced last month. That publication bases its ratings in large part on universities’ contributions to the public interest through endeavors such as service programs and research that drives economic growth. Texas A&M’s ranking by that publication is higher than any other institution in Texas.

Also last month, Money magazine’s new “Best Colleges For Your Money” report showed Texas A&M to rank 4th among all public universities and 13th overall. Also, it again ranked first in the magazine’s list of “The 50 Best Colleges You Can Actually Get Into” and was included in its “50 Colleges That Add the Most Value” section.
