Aggies by the thousands will soon return to the Texas A&M University campus in preparation for the beginning of fall classes on Aug. 31, and university officials have designated Sunday (Aug. 23) as Residence Hall Move-In Assistance Day.

The program, developed by the Department of Residence Life, is designed to welcome new and returning students and their parents by helping them move personal belongings into the residence halls, Residence Life officials note.

As in years past, extra resources will be devoted to move-in day to make things easier for students and their parents. University transportation officials and police officers add that teams of volunteers will be on hand to welcome and assist, and their help will ensure unloading goes as quickly as possible and designated unloading zones near the residence halls do not get too congested. Move-in activities can cause some traffic congestion, and officials have planned accordingly to make the process go as smoothly as possible.

The teams of move-in volunteers – including administrators, faculty, staff and students – will be on duty at the residence halls on the north and south sides of campus from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. For the first time this year, volunteers will also be on West Campus to help students move into the new White Creek Apartments.

Members of the volunteer move-in teams will wear distinctive violet-colored T-shirts so students and parents will easily recognize them. They will help unload vehicles as they pull up into unloading zones. The volunteers will also help load carts and dollies, which are available at no charge for those moving in, and help students get their belongings to their rooms.

In addition to extending hospitality and a warm welcome, the volunteers will also be embodying some of the university’s core values, such as selfless service and respect.

Volunteer applications are no longer being accepted online. However, any individual or student organizations wishing to volunteer can contact Ruth Ann Wolfe at (979) 862-3158 or ruth@tamu.edu.

Residence Life Department officials, along with representatives from University Police, the Recycling Center, University Dining, Transportation Services, Student Life, the Corps of Cadets and various members of the administration, faculty and staff, began planning for this year’s move-in not long after the completion of the one last year.

As a concession to the summer heat, refreshment stations will be set up in strategic locations with free bottles of water provided by PepsiCo. Emergency Medical Service units will also be available at north, south and west campus locations in case of accidents or other medical needs.

Officials say information about which dining facilities will be open during move-in can be found at http://www.dineoncampus.com/tamu/.

If unfamiliar with campus, new students and their families can obtain information by downloading free mobile apps for their cell phones that will give them access to campus maps, directories and on-campus dining information, as well as a calendar of events and sports information. Free downloads and updates are available through the Texas A&M website at http://marcomm.tamu.edu/toolkit/mobile/apps.html.

Signs will mark the designated unloading areas and Transportation Services staff will be available to assist and provide information. After the one-hour time limit, students are asked to move their vehicle out of the unloading zone and into the lot designated on their permit (outside of unloading zones) or lot 100 and ride the free shuttles back to their residence hall.

Parents and other visitors who do not have a permit should also park in Lot 100. Free move-in shuttles servicing Lot 100 at Reed Arena, the residence halls, the Memorial Student Center and Sbisa Dining Center are provided by Transportation Services Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 22-23, from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Move-in maps, as well as street closures, bus routes and other parking information, may be found on the Transportation Services website at http://transport.tamu.edu/. Transportation Services may also be contacted at parking@tamu.edu or by calling 862-PARK.
