ConocoPhillips Gives $1 Million To Texas A&M

The gift, presented to the Texas A&M Foundation, will fund several academic programs at the university.

conoco phillips 66ConocoPhillips has donated $1 million to benefit Texas A&M University. The gift, presented to the Texas A&M Foundation, will fund several academic programs at the university, including the ConocoPhillips SPIRIT Scholars Program.

Greg Garland, current senior vice president, Exploration & Production-Americas, was on hand to present the donation. Garland, a 1980 graduate of Texas A&M, is ConocoPhillips’ official liaison to the university and the designated chairman and CEO of the future Phillips 66.

The SPIRIT Scholars Program has provided educational opportunities and professional development for qualified students since 2003. The program, which operates at Texas A&M and eight other universities, provides:

  • Academic scholarships to sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students
  • Additional financial support for enrichment programs and activities
  • Mentoring opportunities with ConocoPhillips professionals
  • Opportunities to be considered for internships and full-time employment at ConocoPhillips

Thirty-six Aggies in the colleges of engineering and geosciences as well as the Mays Business School participate in the SPIRIT Scholars Program at Texas A&M. They must maintain a 3.25 grade-point average to receive the $5,000-a-year scholarship. Students who intern with the company receive an additional $1,000 scholarship upgrade.

The ConocoPhillips gift, presented March 1, also will fund other programs, student activities, scholarships and fellowships in the college of engineering, College of Geosciences, college of business and other areas.
