The following message is sent on behalf of Dr. Karan L. Watson, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs.

Dr. J. Martyn Gunn, vice provost for academic affairs, has announced his intentions to return to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in his role as Professor of Biochemistry. Dr. Gunn has served Texas A&M’s academic enterprise admirably for the last 5 years, both as Dean of Undergraduate Studies and most recently as Vice Provost. This period has been marked by considerable transition for the university and evolving portfolios for each of these roles.

Dr. Gunn will complete his 35th year at Texas A&M this June. I greatly appreciate the work he has done in support of a variety of issues and initiatives during his term as a leader in the Division of Academic Affairs. Please join me in expressing appreciation to Dr. Gunn for his leadership and service. He has helped us prepare for the next step in the continued pursuit of excellence at Texas A&M University.

At this time I am moving forward with the call for applications to fill the Vice Provost position. The role and the responsibilities of the position are complex and it is essential that transition proceeds smoothly. Dr. Gunn will aid in the process over the course of the summer.

As a member of the Provost’s executive team, the Vice Provost provides leadership for campus-wide initiatives that span both graduate and undergraduate studies, such as accreditation and curricular alignment. Primary areas of concentration are: academic effectiveness, support for high-impact educational experiences, and accountability. The Vice Provost also serves as a facilitator across these efforts in concert with the colleges, departments, and divisions of the university, as well as with off campus partners, including other educational institutions.

Acceptable candidates will have tenure and at least 5 years of academic administrative experience at the department, college, or university level. Candidates will exhibit superb communication, facilitation, and task-completion skills.
