Texas A&M University is ranked second nationally among public institutions by U.S. News & World Report in the “Great Schools, Great Prices” category of the publication’s 2011 “Best Colleges” guidebook and moved up among business school ratings while maintaining its high engineering ranking and overall standing among public national universities.

The U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges 2011 rankings were released today (Tuesday, Aug. 17) in advance of the magazine’s September issue that is scheduled to be on newsstands Aug. 31, with the underlying guidebook to be available Aug. 24, according to an announcement by the publication’s editors.

Texas A&M is the only public university in Texas to be included in the “Great Schools, Great Prices” category. The only public university to rank higher is the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Texas A&M President R. Bowen Loftin said he was “pleased to see Texas A&M ranked so highly for value coupled with quality.”

“While we all understand there are many measures of what constitutes a great university, we are obviously pleased to have the editors of U.S. News & World Report acknowledge that Texas A&M continues to stand out as an institution that is among the very best nationally for offering high-quality education at a cost as affordable as possible as we continue to enhance our high academic standards,” Loftin said.

In the “Best Business Programs” category, Texas A&M’s Mays Business School moved up to a 16 th place tie among public universities—three places higher than in the 2010 rankings.

Texas A&M’s Dwight Look College of Engineering maintained its ninth-place ranking among national public universities. The biological/agricultural engineering program, which is jointly operated with the College of Agriculture and Life Science, is rated the best in the nation. Not all specific engineering areas are ranked every year, officials note, pointing out that Texas A&M has ranked high in several other areas in earlier rankings.

In a new category — “The High School Counselors’ Picks” — Texas A&M tied for 15 th among public universities. U.S. News editors noted that in previous years high school guidance counselors have asked that their opinions be taken into account when preparing the annual rankings, thus prompting the new category.

Overall, Texas A&M remained tied at 22 nd among national public universities.

U.S. News’ annual rankings include both public and private institutions, but the editors note which are public in the specific categories.
