Noted Internet solutions company Akamai ranked College Station 7th in the nation and 11th in the world for Internet speed and connectivity. The quarterly “State of the Internet” report calculated the worldwide average connection speed as 1.7 Mbps, and College Station’s average as over 13 Mbps.

This high ranking is largely due to the presence of Texas A&M University, with its extensive local network and high performance optical connectivity to the rest of the state, officials say.

“There are two components that got us to the top of the list: fast connections to the Internet through our partnerships with the University of Texas, TTVN, LEARN, the Texas optical network, and good local connectivity through BVCNet (Brazos Valley Community Network),” said Willis Marti, director of networking and chief information security officer at Texas A&M.

TTVN started as the Trans-Texas Video Network, a network for video conferences, but it has expanded to provide connectivity to Texas A&M System units and independent school districts. LEARN is a state optical network that provides connectivity to colleges, universities, independent school districts and some public service institutions such as hospitals.

Texas A&M’s efforts with BVCNet and TTVN also provide faster connectivity to local organizations, such as the city governments of Bryan and College Station and school districts in the surrounding areas, Marti said.
