Local Neurosurgeon Named Associate Dean Of HSC-COM
Jonathan A. Friedman, M.D., has been named associate dean for the Bryan-College Station campus of the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine.
“Dr. Friedman is a clinician with impeccable credentials who is known to both hospital systems and the practicing physician community,” said Christopher C. Colenda, M.D., M.P.H., dean of the HSC-COM, who made the appointment. “He has already made significant academic contributions to teaching and research in the college and is committed to the vision that Bryan-College Station will be a medical destination community.”
Friedman is director of the Texas Brain and Spine Institute and an assistant professor of surgery and neuroscience and experimental therapeutics at the HSC-COM.
“These are exciting and momentous times for medicine in Bryan-College Station,” Dr. Friedman said. “The State of Texas has given us a mandate to train more doctors in Texas who will stay and practice here in the state. To support that mission, they have told us to expand our College of Medicine to more than double its current size and to offer all four years of medical school training here in Bryan-College Station. They’ve backed that up with the resources to achieve it.”
In his position, Dr. Friedman will serve as the HSC-COM chief medical officer in Bryan-College Station. His also will play a major role in helping the College build its local clinical academic infrastructure by forming collaborative relationships with individual and multi-specialty provider groups and health systems.
“This is an incredible opportunity for our medical school, for our academic mission, and for our medical professionals and institutions,” Dr. Friedman said. “This expansion in teaching and research in medicine will support and enhance our medical care in the B-CS community.”
“With the dramatic expansion of the medical school in B-CS, we are on the cusp of developing into a full-fledged medical referral center – a medical destination where we can realistically have all facets of subspecialty care, each key piece of technology and achieve excellence in everything we do,” Dr. Friedman continued.
Dr. Friedman received his M.D. from the University of California-San Francisco in 1997 and completed his internship in general surgery from 1997-98. He then completed his residency in neurosurgery at the Mayo Clinic from 1998-2002 and was chief resident from 2002-03.
