Poppy and William McCarty of Amarillo gave $25,000 to the Texas A&M Foundation to establish the Elinor F. (Poppy) and William A. (Bill) McCarty ’57 Sul Ross Scholarship for students in the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets.

Sul Ross Scholarships are the foundation of corps scholarship programs. The scholarships aid in the retention and recruitment of outstanding young men and women to the Corps of Cadets. The scholarships are awarded to high school seniors admitted to Texas A&M who join the corps and who have outstanding scholastic and extracurricular records. Once enrolled at Texas A&M, stipends are paid to cadets each semester during their freshman and sophomore years.

McCarty was born and raised in Wichita Falls and graduated from Texas A&M in 1957 with a degree in marketing. Upon graduation, he commissioned into the United States Army, serving both stateside and in Germany. McCarty is retired chairman of the board of McCarty Hull, Inc. a wholesale food and tobacco distributor in Amarillo and is a partner of Document Shredding & Storage Ltd. also in Amarillo.

He chose to give back to Texas A&M because “I strongly feel that the Corps of Cadets is the ‘keeper of the Spirit’ of Texas A&M University. Future students must be encouraged to participate and obtain the leadership skills taught there. Hopefully our gift will contribute to room, board and tuition.”
