Joe Powell Named Senior Associate Athletic Director And Athletics CFO

Joe Powell has been named a senior associate athletic director and athletics chief financial officer at Texas A&M University.

Joe Powell has been named a senior associate athletic director and athletics chief financial officer (CFO) at Texas A&M University, Director of Athletics Bill Byrne and the Office of the Senior Vice President and CFO K. Sue Redman jointly announced today.

“We are very pleased to have Joe join our staff as a senior associate AD and CFO,” Byrne stated. “He has extensive knowledge in both finances and collegiate athletics and will be a great asset to our overall program.

“We know athletics is excited to gain from Mr. Powell’s experience and expertise,” Redman said. “The Office of the Senior Vice President and CFO wishes him well in this new endeavor and looks forward to continuing to work with him on athletics-related issues.”

“It is a great honor and privilege to have the opportunity to join A&M’s athletics department and to work with Bill’s (Byrne) executive team in providing the athletic financial oversight,” Powell noted.

In his new capacity, Powell will oversee development, management and implementation of operating and capital budgets; establish financial measurement standards, and develop systems to monitor performance against goals; develop and monitor financial policies and budgets for each sport and department. This will also include overseeing the business operations of the concessions and summer camps.

Powell served as associate vice president for business affairs in the Office of the Senior Vice President and CFO at Texas A&M the past two years. During that time he made significant contributions to the university, some of which impacted athletics directly. Among his accomplishments: directing the renovations of The University Club; reorganizing the university’s special event facilities; recruiting and hiring the executive director for dining services and the new director for Reed Arena, and chairing the Transportation Construction Committee, the Business Affairs Student Advisory Committee and the Bicycle Task Force. Beginning March 1, the Division of Finance Business Affairs departments will report to Robert Bisor, associate vice president and chief of staff, on an interim basis.

Before coming to Aggieland, Powell spent 28 years in the University of Texas System in many capacities including associate vice president for business affairs, associate vice president for employee and campus services as well as associate athletic director for finance.

Powell received his bachelor degree in business administration from Sam Houston State in 1966 and earned his master’s degree in 1968 from Sam Houston State. Powell is married and his wife’s name is Judy. They have one daughter, Jody, and a son-in-law, Charles Reed. The Powell’s pride and joy is their granddaughter Julie.
