The Bryan-College Station community will celebrate Juneteenth with the annual Freedom Walk and an interactive storytelling program at the George Bush Presidential Library Center on the campus of Texas A&M University on June 15.
The Juneteenth Celebration begins at 9 a.m. with the Freedom Walk leaving the Lincoln Recreation Center-City of College Station at 1000 Eleanor Street. The walk is free and open to the public; it covers around three miles.
Bush 41 Education Storytellers Guild will present an interactive historical program, “Freedom’s Legacy,” by the Buffalo Soldier’s Heritage Outreach of Texas Parks and Wildlife from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The program depicts the rich history of the Buffalo Soldiers through authentic stories, artifacts and music. The “Texas Story” is an historical record of the 9th Cavalry and 24th and 25th Infantry.
“Hearing the Buffalo Soldiers’ stories with their reenactment brings Texas history alive. We learn of their way of life and appreciate their contributions to the freedom of modern Texas,” says Bush Library and Museum Director of Education Dr. Shirley Hammond.
