Texas A&M former student and U.S. Rep. Will Hurd.
The panelists together have played a role in relevant U.S.-Mexico issues in some form through policy during the past 20 years. President Calderón served Mexico from 2006-2012, overseeing almost 2,000 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border. Rep. Hurd was elected to Congress in 2015, representing the 23rd Congressional District of Texas, which includes San Antonio and 800 miles of the Texas-Mexico Border. Tyson, the former director of the National Economic Council from 1995-96 under President Bill Clinton, has written extensively on trade.
The high-profile list of panelists lives up to the reputation of the Wiley Lecture Series, according to Matlock. Past guests in the student-ran organization’s more than 30-year history include former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, former General Secretary of the Communist Party and President of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev, former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and former U.S. Presidents Gerald R. Ford and Jimmy Carter. More information on the history of the Wiley Lecture Series, including past lectures can be found on their website.
“Being a part of a student organization that has the ability to bring together such high-quality speakers is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Matlock said.
