Be Aware: City of College Station banning use of handheld communications devices while driving, effective November 9.

Students, faculty and staff are being advised to familiarize themselves with the new City of College Station ordinance that prohibits the use of cell phones and other handheld communications devices while operating a moving vehicle or bike, effective Nov. 9. Although the new law does not apply to on-campus operations because no similar state law exists, university officials are strongly urging compliance on campus in the interest of safety.

“This new city ordinance only applies to roadways within the City of College Station, not at Texas A&M University, noted University Police Chief Mike Ragan. “However, due to the concentration of bicycle, pedestrian, and motor vehicle traffic on our roadways, drivers should be extra cautious and avoid using hand held electronic devices while operating a motor vehicle or bicycle on campus.”

Since most members of the university community use College Station streets daily to get to and from the campus, university officials are encouraging everyone to make themselves as fully aware as possible of provisions of the new ordinance. Pertinent information about the new ordinance is available here. Also, the University Police Department (UPD) and Transportation will be using their informational resources to help everyone on campus be more aware of the new College Station ordinance.
