This summer marks the 25th anniversary of the passage and signing of the National Literacy Act. In recognition of this milestone, beginning on Friday (June 10), the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum will be accepting donations of new and gently-used children’s books.

Each donor will receive $2 off their museum admission in appreciation for their help in encouraging childhood literacy. The books will be presented to “Books & A Blanket” at the end of July and from there given to children in the Brazos Valley.

Bring a book – stay for cake!

The Bush Birthday Celebration will take place this Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The party will feature cake, popcorn and other refreshments, balloon creations, a special performance by Grands’ Band and an overall good time. Those attending are aked to don their pearls and crazy to help celebrate the fun sides of both President and Mrs. Bush. The event is free, though regular museum admission fees apply. President and Mrs. Bush will be celebrating their birthdays with family in Kennebunkport, Maine.

The National Literacy Act, designed to promote and support literacy at the local level, is just one in a long list of contributions that President and Mrs. Bush have made to further the cause of literacy in both children and adults. Barbara Bush once said, “All of our nation’s problems – the breakup of families, drugs, homelessness, unemployment – everything would be better if more people could read, write and comprehend.”
