Aggie Student-Athletes Break Academic Record

Texas A&M had a record 314 student-athletes earn a 3.0 grade point average or higher in the 2016 spring semester, capping a stellar academic year for Aggie student-athletes. Nine Texas A&M programs posted a 3.0 GPA or higher as a team during the spring semester, with basketball leading all men’s sports and swimming & diving leading all women’s sports in team GPA.

“I am proud of the success of our student-athletes in the spring semester. This is certainly a reflection of their commitment to excelling in the classroom and earning a degree from a respected academic institution like Texas A&M,” said Director of Athletics Scott Woodward. “It’s evident that our student-athletes are competing at the highest levels academically and athletically with much success.”

In addition to the Aggies’ academic success, Texas A&M advanced every sport it sponsors to a bowl game, NCAA postseason competition or the NCEA Championships — the only university in Division I to do so.

“Our student-athletes continue to raise the bar in the classroom,” said Associate Athletics Director for Academics Jeff Guin. “We are proud of their effort and the culture of academic excellence and expectations that are defined by the Nye Academic Services staff, coaching staffs, and administration to provide our students with the necessary resources and confidence to be successful in the classroom.”

The 2015-16 academic year saw 80 Texas A&M student-athletes earn their degree. Eight Texas A&M sports programs have a current graduation success rate of 85 percent or higher.

Texas A&M’s men’s basketball team (3.12 GPA) and women’s swimming & diving team (3.44 GPA) led their respective genders in team GPA this semester, with both winning SEC Championships during the spring. The men’s basketball team advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16, and the women’s swimming & diving team finished fourth at the NCAA Championships.

In addition to the school-record 314 student-athletes with 3.0-or-higher GPAs this semester, 140 student-athletes earned a 3.5 GPA or higher, and 47 student-athletes on 12 different Aggie teams earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in the spring. A record 29 student-athletes earned Dean’s Honor Roll and Distinguished Student honors in the spring semester, bringing the total to 41 for the academic year.
