Texas A&M University officials announced today that the Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry’s name will be officially changed to Texas A&M University College of Dentistry. The college, located in Dallas, was acquired by The Texas A&M University System in 1996. In 1999, the college became a component of the Texas A&M Health Science Center (HSC). Then in July of 2013, the university announced it would merge with HSC to provide for a unique collaboration that promotes extensive academic and scientific opportunities in biomedical education and discovery.

“The merging of Texas A&M University and the Health Science Center has been a highly successful endeavor, bringing together the very best the nation has to offer in cutting-edge biomedical research and education,” says John Sharp, Chancellor of The Texas A&M University System. “Rebranding the College of Dentistry furthers our commitment to unifying valuable resources to promote health and wellness for our state, nation and world.”

Texas A&M University President Michael K. Young says the move aligns with Texas A&M’s focus on great global challenges. “The university is known for addressing great global challenges, partly by uniting disciplines and colleges, to find solutions to significant issues that really matter. By better formalizing the College of Dentistry in its position as part of university operations, we look forward to even greater opportunities for our students and faculty to provide care to the community they currently and will eventually serve. We also look forward to even further integrate the college into the research activities of the university.”

The Texas A&M University College of Dentistry is known internationally for producing excellent clinicians; nearly one-third of all dentists in Texas are graduates of the college. The college’s strong emphasis on research was recognized by the National Institutes of Health when it awarded the college in 2008 with an Oral Health Research Education (R25) grant, named “CUSPID” for Clinicians Using Science to Produce Inspired Dentists. And, like its namesake Texas A&M University, the college is dedicated to service, conducting outreach for the recruitment of underserved populations as well as providing quality, low-cost dental care to local community members in need.

The university is also notifying the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
