Black History Month Observances Continue At Texas A&M

Texas A&M University is celebrating Black History Month with a number of events and activities offered through its MSC Carter W. Woodson Black Awareness Committee and other groups on and off campus, including the Brazos Valley African American Museum and the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra.

The month-long observance began with the Ninth Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Breakfast and continues through February with lectures, performances, movies and other events. The next scheduled event is “We Shall Overcome: Civil Rights Movement of the South 1954-1968” presented at noon Feb. 20 at the Brazos Valley African American Museum. “Dine in Distinction: What a Time to Be Alive” is sponsored by the Black Graduate Students’ Association and is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 20 at The Veranda. For more information, email bgsa.tamu@gmail.com.

The Marian Anderson String Quartet will perform “Follow the Drinking Gourd” by Jonathan McNair at 5 p.m. Feb. 21 in Rudder Theater. Go to the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra webpage at http://bvso.org/events for information.

The Black Graduate Students’ Association will sponsor “How Sweet the Sound (A Celebration of Black History Through Music)” from 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 24 in Rudder Plaza.

Aggie Cinema will present “Chi-raq,” a 2015 film directed and produced by Spike Lee and co-written by Lee and Kevin Willmott. Set in Chicago, the film is a satire that touches on gang violence. The film is scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 26 in MSC 2406. For more information, email davidrag5@gmail.com.

Although not technically part of Black History Month, the Enhancing Diversity Seminar Series will feature a lecture on “Can We Talk about Race? A Conversation with Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum on Critical Learning Dialogues,” from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 25 in the MSC Bethancourt Rooms A&B. The Office of the Vice President and Associate Provost for Diversity and the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies are sponsoring the lecture which features Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum, President Emerita of Spelman College.
