Veterans Day is Wednesday (Nov. 11) and several events are planned at Texas A&M University to honor both Aggie veterans and current military personnel as well as those who died during times of war.

Starting early Wednesday, the Veteran Resource & Support Center (VRSC) will honor the service of veterans by providing them free breakfast from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. in Room 112 Koldus.

All students, faculty and staff are invited to stop by and post a small American Flag in honor or memory of a veteran on the wall in the VRSC from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

From 1 to 3 p.m. the Veteran Services Office, located on the second floor of the Pavilion in Room 205, will offer refreshments. For more information, call 845-8075.

To honor all Aggie veterans, the Corps of Cadets will conduct a wreath-laying ceremony at 11:11 a.m. Wednesday on the Memorial Plaza, formerly known as the Corps Plaza.

The ceremony has traditionally occurred at three separate locations on campus: the World War I Memorial at West Gate (Old Main), the Spanish American War Memorial (south of the Corps Center) and the memorial for all Aggies who have died in our nation’s wars since World War II (on the Corps Plaza). The World War I and Spanish American War Memorials have now been moved to the Memorial Plaza on the north end of the Quad.

“The ceremony begins at the 11th minute of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, when the World War I Armistice was officially signed, with a few brief words regarding the significance of Veterans Day in Aggieland followed by three teams of two cadets laying wreaths simultaneously on the three memorials on the plaza,” explains Col. Glenn Starnes ’81, USMC (Ret.) and assistant commandant for operations and training.

Starnes adds that the wreath laying will be followed by a rifle volley by a Ross Volunteer firing detail. The ceremony concludes with the playing of “Taps.”

Students, faculty, staff and the public are invited to attend.

To continue the Veterans Day theme, the VRSC will host a VetConnect Veteran-Employer event titled “Making Your Military Experience A Company Asset” with TEKsystems in Room 111 Koldus from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday (Nov. 12). The event will include information about online presences such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn; elevator speech tips; resume and cover letter writing; online applications; and interviewing tips.
