Ann and Steve Lovett of College Station have been named Texas A&M University’s Parents of the Year for 2015-16. The announcement was made Friday (April 17) night during Parents’ Weekend activities.

The Lovetts are the 40th couple to receive this honor.

The Lovetts – Ann, Texas A&M Class of 1981, and Steve, Class of 1982 – were nominated for the honor by their daughter Cassidy Lovett, Class of 2018. They have four children who are Aggies. They include Katlyn Lovett Martin, Class of 2010, Scott Lovett, Class of 2013, Kyle and Cassidy Lovett.

Ann started working for the Texas A&M Foundation immediately out of school and never left. She is currently the gift processing manager of all directed gifts large and small that donors give to Texas A&M.

Steve has been a self-employed commercial real estate appraiser in College Station for more than 20 years, working primarily for municipal entities such as Texas Department of Transportation, Bryan Texas Utilities and the cities of Bryan and College Station.

“My three older siblings and I were raised in a Christian home with Texas A&M being the closest thing to Heaven my parents could compare it to,” Cassidy said in her nomination letter. “Each of us learned so many life lessons from Mom and Dad. They established a good home for us and taught us the meaning of the Aggie Core Values: Excellence, Leadership, Learning, Integrity, Respect and Selfless Service.”

Cassidy adds that her parents taught them the value of hard work, taking initiative and being true to your word. She points out that the couple learned many of these lessons while studying at Texas A&M.

All four of the Lovett’s children followed their parents to Texas A&M. “My parent’s Aggie experiences had such an impact in the development of their lives that we decided we wanted to have the same experiences in our own lives,” Cassidy explains.

The Lovett’s children remember that every year during football season, Steve would rejoin his old Corps buddies and they would barbeque brisket and sausage and reminisce about the old times and Good Bull experiences they shared.

“Prior to any football game we ever attended, we ALWAYS went to watch the Corps step off on the Quad. It’s one of the best aspects of an Aggie football weekend and is a tremendous tangible display of the Aggie spirit. We also attended almost every home baseball game. We have had the same season tickets for quite a long time,” Cassidy adds.

The Lovetts are members of both the Corps of Cadets Association and the Ross Volunteer Association. Ann is active in the Brazos County Aggie Mom’s Club, handing out Aggie Mom Goody Bags during finals, and serves at events throughout the year. The couple is actively involved in the Brazos County A&M Club and donate their time and effort to the university through helping serve with the Big Event, working alongside the students who attend their church.

The family regularly purchases memorial bricks in front of the Sanders Corps Center to honor either people in the family, friends or past professors. “My parents do this not for self-promotion, but to recognize those people who have had an impact on their lives, as a small way to express their gratitude and say thank you,” Cassidy explains.

The Lovetts were named Fish Camp Namesakes and encouraged their children to attend Fish Camp, as well as Silver Taps and Muster – two of Texas A&M’s most solemn traditions honoring students and former students who have passed away.

Cassidy concludes her nomination by saying her parents are different from other nominees in the sense that they know and love every aspect of Texas A&M and respect the university and their memories of being here and the fact that the university’s values transform students into the men and women that one day will change the world for the better.

“They will continue to donate time, effort and financial resources to this university because it is so dear to them and holds so many fond memories. It is a place where they had tremendous life-changing experiences and a place they are proud to call home,” she says.

Parent’s Weekend began in 1919 to honor Aggie Moms, and since has evolved to honor Aggie Parents. It has become an annual spring celebration with activities such as the annual Aggie Moms’ Boutique, concerts by the Singing Cadets, athletic events, various Aggie performers and open houses at the homes of the university’s president and vice president for student affairs. It concludes Sunday with numerous award presentations.
